NYO Girls' Hoopers Participate in Atlanta Hawks MLK Event
Over Martin Luther King Weekend, several NYO girls’ basketball players accepted an opportunity to play in an MLK hoops tournament sponsored by the Atlanta Hawks. This opportunity all started when Senior Director of Basketball Programs for the Atlanta Hawks, Jon Babul made a call to NYO Executive Director, Tony Watkins on Wednesday, January 11.
“Jon called us in a bind," said Watkins. "The tournament just had a team drop out, and he wanted to know if NYO could quickly put a team together to play in the event.” (Click Title to Read More)
Coach Tony called NYO Girls Basketball Commissioner Mara Perkins, WNBA League Director Rick Fantucci, and NYO Majors Director Mark Elliott. The three of them decided that NYO will give its best shot to put a team together in just a couple of days.
As you would expect, the NYO community made it happen and eight, talented players participated in the event: Charlsie Berkel, Caroline Berkey, Allison Hoffman, Elena Karas, Isabella Franco, Franki Kimche-Gilstrap, Alex Norris, and Avery Fantucci.
This event was designed to be more than just a basketball tournament. In addition to a Saturday full of hoops, all participants and coaches were part of an NBA panel discussion moderated by Ernie Johnson (TNT/NBATV). Sunday’s events included a banquet at the Omni Hotel with inspirational speaker, Inky Johnson, and box seats to watch the Atlanta Hawks play the Milwaukee Bucks. A fabulous time was had by everyone involved.
NYO would like to thank the Atlanta Hawks for including us in such a wonderful event!
