With two Championships already under their belt, the Longhorns played in the Training Legends Georgia State Championship the weekend of June 22nd – 24th. The Longhorns came into bracket play with a 2-1 record and their first bracket-play opponent was the East Side Hurricanes. Incredible pitching and hitting by our boys allowed the Longhorns to come out of that game with a 13-1 victory over the Hurricanes and secured the ‘Horns a spot in the Championship game. In the Championship, the boys faced the Buckhead Bulldogs. After an extremely strong start in the first inning that ended 7-1 in favor of our Longhorns, Buckhead’s strong pitching and bats allowed them to make it a close game. However, our boys held on to the lead by giving them a fierce fight and won the game 8-6 to claim the Training Legends Georgia State Championship title for their third Championship of the season!
For the final weekend of the season, the boys traveled to Cumming to compete in the Firecracker Blowout. After pool play, the Longhorns landed in the gold bracket and their first opponent was the AYBA Raiders. After a slow start in the first inning, the boys came on strong, defeating the Raiders 12-5 to advance to the semi-final game. In the semi-final game, the boys played the Silver City Longhorns. The NYO Longhorns came out swinging in that game and strong hitting, fielding and pitching allowed the boys to establish and hold on to a commanding lead the entire game, culminating in a 10-2 victory and sending them on to the Championship. The Longhorns then faced a talented Murphy Candler Blue team in the Championship, but our boys came ready to play in their final game of the season. Their bats were hot, the pitching was lights out and the fielding was game on. It was just one of those games where an incredible season ended precisely the way that it should – with an awesome 11-3 win over a talented team for a Gold Bracket Championship victory! The Longhorns ended with an impressive overall 21-5 record for the season!
Teams, coaches and families as special as this group don’t come along very often and every member of the Longhorns Family was well aware of this and felt grateful to be a part of it. Not only did this team play outstanding baseball with incredible results, but the manner in which the coaches coached each game created a team environment that was truly exceptional. The boys’ successes were celebrated and any missteps were met with a “you’ll get ’em next time” approach that created confident, enthusiastic baseball players, all of whom were undoubtedly playing their best baseball this summer as a result. There were always smiles and laughter in the dugout and on the field. There is no doubt that these boys will look back on this summer as one of the best parts of their childhood and the parents will always be grateful for the example set by these coaches. They showed the boys that the best pathway to success is staying positive always, persevering when thing don’t go your way and, most of all, having fun doing what you are doing!
The Longhorns Family cannot thank Coach Carter, Coach Anarumo, Coach Campbell and Coach McCullough enough for making this team the best of the best – it truly does not get any better! Hook ’em Horns!
