The 14U ’05 NYO Patriots won the GSA World Series in Rockmart, GA on Saturday 11/3. The team combined to go 5-0 in pool and bracket play and only allowed 6 runs total in the 5 games. Stellar pitching by CeCe Smith, Vivian Carroll, and Laine Finley was on display all day. Mia Alarcon, Lucy Preston, and Susan Wiggers were rock solid behind the plate.
Defensively, the Patriots turned two double plays in the Championship game. The first was on a bunt attempt with runners on 2nd and 3rd. The team turned a 1-2-5 double play (CeCe Smith to Susan Wiggers to Virginia King) to get the Patriots out of the inning. The other double play was on a line drive to 1B Leighton Sarajian who then fired a strike to Libby Stewart at 2B to double off the runner to end the 4th and final inning with only 5 minutes left on the game clock and seal the victory.
In Pool play, the Patriots won 3 close games fueled by big hits from Caroline Rawls and a key bunt single by Riley King Walker that led to a 3 run inning in a 4-3 win. The girls’ bats really got hot as the temperatures cooled down in the semifinal game, scoring 12 runs in the 2nd inning behind 13 hits. Every Patriot either got a hit or scored a run in the big inning including 2 hits each from Laine Finley, Virginia King, and Vivian Carroll.
In the championship game, CeCe Smith had a big Triple in the 3rd inning to push the Patriots up 3-0 and came home to score on a ground ball by Laine Finley, adding enough cushion to seal the 4-2 win.
The championship game did not start until 10:00pm and the Patriots rolled out of Rockmart close to midnight. It was a great day and the girls played flawlessly for 5 games. Awesome day for the girls and for NYO.
