The 8U Blue Angels won the silver bracket championship in this past weekend’s Sandy Plains Summer Slam! The Blue Angels recovered from two early losses in pool play to defeat the Thunderboltz 18-9 behind inside the park home runs by Lane Deriso, Emily Center, and Kaelyn Rolla and excellent play by Mary Edwards. Then, on Sunday morning, Olivia Stonecipher drove in six runs to seal a 19-5 victory over the Murphy Candler Purple Cobras. This set the stage for a double-elimination rematch with the Thunderboltz – who took the first game – resulting in a “one inning shootout” for the championship. After holding the Thunderboltz to three runs in the top of the shootout inning, the Blue Angels then had huge hits from Anna Ford, MacKenzie Williams, and Alyssa Herskowitz to tie the game. Then after clutch singles from Emily Center and Piper O’Neill, Ellie Bailey had the game winning hit to score Emily – and the Blue Angels celebrated their second title in a row! Also a huge shoutout to Asher Gleeson and Katelyn Modisett who battled through injuries this weekend and made very significant contributions to the team’s success. Go Blue Angels!
