The 8U Longhorns traveled west to Douglasville for the Hunter Park Memorial Day Shootout this past weekend.  The oppressive heat did not slow down the Longhorn stampede on their way to the championship game on Sunday.  The Horns opened pool play against the Southwest Sox and bashed their way to a 22-12 victory.  The offensive juggernaut included a 5 RBI game from George Thomas, as well as multiple RBI games from Lucas Rosenbloom, Cole Sprague, Spencer Moseley and Wesley Ackel.  The East Cherokee Outlaws had the Horns number in the second game of pool play, but excellent defensive plays were made by Davis Carroll and Graham Roberts.  The Longhorns started early in tourney play on Sunday with an 8AM first pitch against the Temple Allstars.  Wesley Ackel and Davis Connell each hammered 4 RBIs to lead the team.  George Thomas, Cole Sprague, Lucas Rosenbloom and Ben Ashley all contributed multiple RBIs on several doubles as well.  Next up was the number one seeded Winston Nationals.  The Horns were lathered up from the heat and jumped out to an early 15-0 lead.  Cole Zelickson and Max Tavani locked down the corners in the field for the Horns, with Zelickson gunning multiple runners from third to first.  The Horns dispatched the Nationals with a final score of 18-7 and rolled into the championship game looking for hardware against the Alpharetta Eagles.  The Horns fought tirelessly in a defensive slugfest that saw Ben Ashley turn a 5-3 double play in the fourth.  Spencer Moseley kept the Horns in the game with an inside the park home run, but ultimately the Eagles defense snuffed out a two out rally in the bottom of the sixth. The runner up trophy and medals gleaming in the sweltering heat were only a taste of success to come for this rumbling stampede.  On to the next one Horns!
