Bob Goldberg’s fourth-seeded Gators used a relentless pressing defense and a constant fast-break offense to capture the NYO majors’ league basketball tournament by besting George Mori’s second-seeded Devils by a 42-29 score, at the Chastain gym. The Gators had gained the finals by beating the Tigers in the quarter-finals and then outscoring the number 1 seed and previously unbeaten Deacons, in the semi-finals game. The Devils had bested the Irish in the quarter finals on a buzzer beater by Cannon Mori and then had beaten the Yellow Jackets in their semi-final game.
The Devils scored the first 2 points of the game on a Ryan Smith short-range jump shot, but the Gators scored the next 13 points and led 13-2, after the end of the 1stquarter. Constant drives to the basket by the balanced Gators, led by Campbell, Cavinder, Marshall and Callaghan, also put the Devils in early foul trouble and scrambling to catch up.
The last 3 quarters were played on an even basis, and the Devils, led by the drives of John Millican, even cut the Gators lead to 8 points with the ball in the 4thquarter, but 2 quick run-outs by the Gators pushed their lead back to 12 and made the climb uphill by the Devils too much to overcome. The Gators worked to run out the clock with their working margin, and came away with the victory.
