June 15, 2019 — The 10U Liberty started off the day by winning 3 pool games to earn the #1 seed for bracket play. Our All Stars then won 2 close games to walk away as tournament champions. What was supposed to be a one-day tournament actually ended a few minutes after midnight, allowing us to celebrate Father’s Day very early.
The Liberty 10U pitching staff of Lily Brevick, McKenna Bekkers, Ridgely Chastain, Allison Rawlsand Katie Wrigleyrecorded a total of 23 strikeouts on the day, in addition to recording 4 defensive outs at the Pitcher position. In spite of being out on the fields for 14 hours, these young ladies battled every inning.
Our defense did a great job all day, keeping us in every game. Catchers Charlie McDonald, Mia Springfieldand Megan Wrigleyall played great in the heat, recording 5 defensive outs on the day. Bekkers, Chastain, and Audrey Jordanall recorded multiple outs at Short Stop position, with Jordan fielding the hardest hit ball of the day. Allie Sopher, Megan Wrigley and McDonald played the shut-down corner role at third base, each snagging a line drive for an out. Anabelle Thompsonalso recorded several outs at second base throughout the day.
The Liberty 10U bats got off to a great start, thanks to the Wrigley twins. Katie Wrigley set the tone in game 1 with a bomb that cleared the center field fence for a home run. Megan Wrigley later ended that same game with a walk-off single / RBI. Reagan Jones, McDonald, and Thompson also had a big day at the plate, recording multiple hits and RBIs each.
This team has worked so hard on base running, which really was the difference in this tournament. In our semi-final game, NYO was trailing 4-3 heading into the final inning. Jessica Barrios, Rawls, Megan Wrigley, Jordan and Brevick all had stolen bases in our last inning, contributing to a 5-run rally. We held on to the lead to win that game 8-6. Then in the championship game, after falling behind 5-2, Liberty 10U again used aggressive base running as part of a 4-run rally. Chastain reached based on a walk, and then proceeded to steal two bases before scoring the winning run on a passed ball to seal the victory.
