NYO MAJORS OFF TO ROUSING START; ONE “GAME FOR THE AGES” ALREADY

The NYO majors basketball league is off to a rousing start as teams get early games under their belts and test their pre-season preparation in live games.

We have already had a “game for the ages” in the league, as last Sunday night the Tide, coached by Windham Pridgen, and the Wildcats, coached by Carlos Carreras, fought to a double overtime 46-46 tie. The photo shows action from that game, as Asher Swalm from the Tide goes for a shot, defended by the Wildcats’ Bobby Jackson

There were many heroes in the game (16 to be exact).  Noted efforts include Clayton Miller’s 22 points for the Wildcats, 18 of which came in the fourth quarter or in overtime. Also pacing the Wildcats were Alex Carreras with 7 points and Jack Logan with 6 points. Jake Agolli, with 21 points, and Will Kennedy paced the Tide in scoring.

The Tide had jumped out to a 23-10 lead at half-time and hoped to cruise to a win.  However, the Wildcats had other ideas, as two, 3-point shots by Clayton Miller late pulled the Wildcats even, to a 35-35 score at the end of regulation.  The Tide tried again to pull away in the first overtime, leading by 4 with a minute left, but that first overtime period ended at 41 all.

In the second overtime, the Wildcats seemed to have the game finally salted away, with a 4-point lead and under 50 seconds left.  Jake Agolli hit a free throw for the Tide, to cut the lead to 3, and then the Tide stole the ball. Will Green and Will Kennedy of the Tide did not want the fun to end, as Green pulled down 3 offensive rebounds off of missed – point shots in the last minute, passing the ball to Kennedy off of his last rebound. Kennedy squared up at NBA range to hit a 3-point goal at the buzzer, to deny the Wildcats a win and force the tie.
