Anjini Naidu hit a free throw with 20 seconds left to break a 28-28 tie and Liz Hanley made a key steal and added another free throw with 8 seconds left in the game, to seal a 30-28 win by the Ramblers over the Jackets, in the NYO majors championship basketball game. The Ramblers, coached by Frank Schettino, and the Jackets, coached by Bill Braswell, played 32 minutes of intense, exciting and entertaining basketball; there were 4 lead changes in the 4th quarter alone. The Ramblers, as the 4 seed, and the Jackets, as the 3 seed, had fought their way through the tournament bracket with 2 wins each, and besting higher seeds coming into the championship game.
The Ramblers, behind Ryan Wrigley’s inside scoring, jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the game. But the relentless, rebounding Jackets, behind Hadden Buschmann, Avery Braswell and Olivia Siskin, reeled off 14 straight points over the 2nd and 3rd quarter, and seemed to take command of the game as they took an 18-11 lead. A 3 point shot from the right corner by Sienna Schettino roused the Ramblers as the 3rdquarter came to a close.
The 4th quarter was played with no lead greater than 4 points as each team played relentless defense as they tried to gain an edge on the other. Their play brought them to a 28-28 game with 20 seconds left, when Anjini Naidu sealed the deal and brought the championship home for the Ramblers.
What a great game it was, and what a great season it was as well.
