For the first 3 and half quarters, it was a well-played back and forth affair with the Mustangs holding a 13-7 lead with 3 minutes to go in the game. However, the final 3 minutes, which included 4 touchdowns and 3 lead changes, is what many will remember for a long time. With just under 3 minutes remaining, the Wolf Pack completed a long drive with a touchdown that tied the game at 13-13. The Mustangs then proceeded to march down the field and score on a long run to take a 19-13 lead with 1:30 left on the clock. The Wolf Pack then wasted no time by scoring on a long run on the first play of the ensuing drive and added the extra point to go on top 20-19 with a little over 1 minute left in the game. The Mustangs were undeterred and drove the ball into Wolf Pack territory with less than 30 seconds left before the Wolf Pack intercepted a pass returning it for a touchdown and 27-19 lead. The never say die Mustangs fought back again knowing they still had a chance to tie and force overtime. On their first play they executed a well-designed double pass trick play that almost went the distance and advanced the ball well into Wolf Pack territory setting up one final play. On the final play of the game, the Wolf Pack were able to get a sack and stop the Mustangs to record a 27-19 victory. The excitement of the last 3 minutes left many fans wishing the game could have continued into a 5th quarter. Both the Mustangs and Wolf Pack are to be congratulated on a very well-played and hard fought championship football game.
